Fabric Block Printing Basics
Beginner Workshop
Join us at La Merceria for a hands-on evening exploring the fundamentals of block printing on fabric. This beginner-friendly workshop is designed for curious makers, sewists, and textile lovers who want to learn a traditional printing technique in a relaxed, supportive studio environment.
In this class, you’ll learn how to carve your own simple printing block, properly ink and print onto fabric, and experiment with placement and pattern. We’ll focus on building confidence with the tools, understanding the printing process, and embracing the beauty of handmade results. No prior experience is required.
Each student will leave with their own hand‑carved block and printed fabric to take home and continue experimenting with after class.

What to Bring
Please arrive with two or three very simple design ideas or shapes you’d like to try adapting into a block for carving. We’ll review designs together during class. If your design isn’t suitable for carving, several simple design ideas will be provided for you to choose from for your own carving.
Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting stained, or bring an oversized T-shirt or apron to protect your clothes.
